Lower School Curriculum
The Lower School curriculum has been carefully designed
to support and develop its students and is underpinned by
expertise and educational best practice for learning at this
age. The focus is firmly on their future, and on helping them
to develop the strong academic foundations and excellent
learning skills required to excel in their GCSEs.
The curriculum has been prepared to ensure solid grounding
in the core subjects, while also exposing the students to new
ones, so they are prepared to make an informed choice
at GCSE. It emphasises cross-curricular learning, supporting
students to make connections right across their subjects.
This ensures they develop the rigour and quality of
understanding required at GCSE and beyond.
All lessons are taught by specialists who take the subject all the way to A Level and possess an
in-depth understanding of the knowledge which students will need to acquire. Over the two years
in the Lower School the teaching approach adapts, as students progress away from the closely
supervised style on which they once depended, to one of proactive independent learning and
critical thought. The pace and expectations on them increase steadily over this period to ensure
they are thoroughly prepared for the senior school and transition well to their GCSE courses.
In keeping with the wider school ethos, students are taught self-reflection and are assessed on
their attitude to learning, giving them autonomy over their progress, learning and development.
We believe this approach is essential if they are to reach their full academic potential as they
move up the school.
