Last Friday evening, parents of Old Bloxhamists (Friends of Bloxham) gathered for a memorable wine tasting event led by Simon Batten our School Archivist. The warm atmosphere, setting the perfect backdrop for an exploration of six wines from around the globe.

As guests arrived, they were greeted with a glass of Bouvet Ladubay Saumur Brut and a beautifully set room, thanks to the hard work of Bloxham students studying BTEC Hospitality. The students not only planned, prepared and served the delicious food but also took the time to read out each course, adding a personal touch to the evening.

Simon Batten captivated the audience with his extensive knowledge of wine. He shared the fascinating history of each vineyard and described the unique terroirs from which they originated and the distinct flavours that characterise them. His engaging style encouraged everyone to share their thoughts and experiences, fostering a lively discussion about the nuances of taste and aroma!

The selection of wines was thoughtfully curated, offering an interesting journey through various regions and styles: Sauvignon Blanc from Constantia, Gewurztraminer from Alsace, a Gruner Veltiner from Austria, then a French Malbec and an South Australian Shiraz. Each tasting was accompanied by a carefully crafted dish, designed to pair with the particular wine. It was interesting to note how different the wines tasted with or without the food.

It was a great evening, filled with laughter, learning, and a shared appreciation for the art of winemaking. It was a wonderful opportunity for parents of Old Bloxhamists to reconnect with the School and each other and to support our talented Hospitality students.
