Last night’s game between England and Scotland, the oldest fixture in international football, included an own goal by the England player Harry Maguire. But did you know that the first ever own goal in international football was scored by an Old Bloxhamist, Edgar Field, in the same fixture 142 years ago?
Edgar, a pupil at Bloxham between 1863 and 1867, went on to become an accountant and was a keen amateur footballer. He made his debut against Scotland in 1876 as part of the team pictured below (back left), only the fifth international match in history. He played again in March 1881 when his own goal, scored in the 79th minute, contributed to a 6-1 win to Scotland. He never played for England again!
