The Old Bloxhamist Golf Society (OBGS) opened the OB sporting year with the annual Autumn Meet on Thursday 12 September. As is tradition, they gathered at Northamptonshire County Golf Club to compete for the much sought-after Humphries Trophy.
Opened for play in 1910, the original 18 hole course was designed by distinguished golf course architect , Harry S Colt, who also designed Wentworth and Sunningdale. The course has witnessed relatively few major alterations since then, with the most notable being the alteration of the pattern and arrangement of bunkers by James Braid in 1947 and the relocation of the 18th green.
The traditional heathland course, an R&A Open qualifying venue and ranked in the English Top 100 Courses, always provides OBs with a suitable golfing challenge. This year the intrepid golfers had the additional challenge of the elements to contend with. Despite wind and rain (fairly standard in the context of this summer), Peter Deeley (OB Parent) romped home to take the trophy with 34 points. Carl Norton (Wf 71-74) and Simon Smith(Wf 71-76) tied for second on 28 points, someway behind.
All players enjoyed a course in great condition and a substantial golfers’ meal afterwards.
Results:
1 Peter Deeley (34 points)
2= Carl Norton (28 points)
2= Simon Smith (28 points)
We are grateful to Simon Smith for captaining the OBGS and to Richard Beard (Ry 72-76) for this report.
