The Royal Academy of Arts received nearly 18,000 submissions for this year’s Young Artists’ Summer Show, an exhibition which has been delayed until October due to lockdown restrictions. Toby’s Self Portrait was one of only 120 shortlisted entries to be put on show in the Royal Academy’s London gallery, an incredible achievement for our young artist.’
Toby’s artwork was influenced by research of Rembrandt’s self portraits and created using dry point engraving to make a print. Toby’s artwork is available to view in the Young Artists’ Summer Show online. The exhibition is open at the gallery until 22nd November with free tickets available here. His piece was also included in a photograph alongside details of the exhibition in the Sunday Telegraph.’
Toby visited the Royal Academy last week to see his piece in the exhibition, “I was very impressed by all of the great art on display, it was a really good experience and I enjoyed every moment of it.” Commenting on his journey to success Toby said, “I was delighted to be shortlisted for the Young Artists’ Summer Show and I believe I could not have done this without Mr Matthew.”
Director of Art, Mr Matthew, said: ‘We are thrilled for Toby and his extraordinary success. National recognition for an artist does not come much higher than being exhibited on the hallowed walls of the Royal Academy, and this achievement could be equated to performing at the Royal Albert Hall or scoring a try Twickenham.’
