Bloxham Sixth Formers, Eunoia Society members, and guests, examine the issues facing human rights with Director of Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti CBE.

Director of Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti CBE, visited Bloxham yesterday to discuss human rights and civil liberties in the world today.

Ms Chakrabarti studied law at the London School of Economics and went on to be a barrister for the Home Office. Then in 2001 she joined Liberty and after only 2 years was appointed its director. Ms Chakrabarti is nationally regarded as an excellent public affairs lobbyist and as she pointed out the Sun described her as ‘the most dangerous woman in Britain.’

The audience were introduced the work of Liberty since the group’s inception in 1934, and how the ever-changing world will always have consequences for human rights and civil liberties. Concerns such threats to equality and race relations, attitudes concerning the refugee crisis, and internet security were explored. During the Q&A session, sixth formers, members of Eunoia Society, and guests were eager to ask questions relating to Shami Chakrabarti’s views on surveillance, ethical dilemmas concerning terror, and the work being undertaken at Liberty HQ today. It was a very engaging, accessible, and at times, humorous, lecture, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The school were absolutely delighted to welcome such a fantastic speaker; thank you Ms, Chakrabarti and Liberty for your time.
