July has seen some real adventures for our Outdoor Education students. Gold Duke of Edinburgh participants completed their assessed expedition in the Lake District and our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) students spent six days in Shropshire.
Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award
Two groups of Sixth Form students recently completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh assessed expedition in the Lake District. James B., Emily C., Jamie J., Lysa P. and George U formed the first group and Freya H., Archie M., Fred S., Amy S. and Sam S. comprised the second. Both groups were treated to excellent weather on the three-night trip, and students decided to wild camp by Grizedale Tarn on their third night, demonstrating their excellent camp craft skills. Supervising teacher Miss Merris said: “Those who completed this physical and mental feat should be proud of the way they conducted themselves during the expedition.”
Combined Cadet Force Training
Early in July, 24 cadets spent six days at Nesscliffe Training Area in Shropshire.
The students had an excellent experience at the camp, practicing a huge range of skills. Their list of activities for the week was great and included a live firing range day, fining the cadet A2 rifle, air rifles and Dismounted Close Combat Trainer (DCCT). The cadets’ Personal Development Day included water sports, caving, archery, climbing and laser tag. This was followed by Combat day with Training in a Built Up Area (TIBUA), Close Quarter Battle (CQB) lane, vehicle checkpoint and searching, searching for caches (Rummage) and radio procedure. Military Skills Day included survival techniques, tactical stand (escape room) exercises, sniper stalk practice and reaction to incident blank firing. See photos from the day on our Flickr page here.
