Every Wind and Brass player at Bloxham was inspired by the award-winning Charlie Bates Jazz Sextet last Thursday…

The students had an opportunity to experience amazing musicianship first hand, taking part in a morning of workshops exploring jazz repertoire and improvisation techniques. The sextet then gave a performance in Chapel to half the school which included a New Orleans rendition of Oh When the Saints.

Music from the workshops were celebrated in an evening of live Jazz for parents and staff, accompanied by prosecco and canapes. The Jazz Band was on fine form as students took solos with confidence, style and the occasional suppressed grin. There was even the opportunity for Bloxham’s very own ‘Liam Gallagher’ to perform a jazz rendition of the Oasis classic Wonderwall.

‘Pupils are often told when things are right or wrong, but no words were needed on Thursday.’ Director of Music, Alex Redpath.

They knew they were in the company of top class musicians. In the words of one student: ‘It was just insanely brilliant!’
