In the week leading up to half-term, we saw a focus on ‘Being Well’ highlighting the importance of maintaining both mental and physical health all year-round. We spoke with the Deputy Head, Pastoral, Louise Ladds, to reflect on the week and explore her approach to wellness.
WHat have been the biggest takeaways from ‘BEING WELL’ WEEK?
We’ve been making a real effort to highlight what we do all year-round, not just during this week. We’ve had a strong focus on community and coming together as a school thorough collective worship, house singing and sports. We’re fortunate to have great food, and we’ve offered yoga and mindfulness sessions every evening. It’s important that we continue talking about staying healthy in mind, body, and soul, even after the week is over. Setting goals and having a purpose is crucial, whether that’s becoming a peer listener, making new friends, or achieving academically. And if you don’t achieve something right away, it’s important to reflect, give yourself credit, and keep going.
WHAT ARE THREE BEST PRACTICES YOU FOLLOW TO MAINTAIN BOTH MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH?
I try to make sure to get enough sleep by aiming for seven to eight hours a night. I also aim to prioritise exercise, especially getting outdoors for a walk or run in the fresh air, even if it’s just for 30 minutes. Being outdoors and getting some fresh air can really improve my mood. Lastly, I make sure to take time to connect with friends and family outside of my usual day-to-day interactions.
ARE THERE SPECIFIC FOODS YOU INCORPORATE INTO YOUR DIET THAT CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR WELL-BEING?
I focus on eating plenty of fruit and vegetables to stay energised. I know they are good for me, and I try to drink as much water as possible throughout the day.
IS THERE AN ASPECT OF YOUR CURRENT EATING HABITS OR DAILY ROUTINE, SUCH AS SLEEP OR EXERCISE, THAT YOU’D LIKE TO IMPROVE FOR BETTER OVERALL WELL-BEING?
I could definitely benefit from getting more sleep and drinking more water. I also know that I struggle with fitting in running before work and I am working on a realistic schedule in term-time!
WHEN YOU’RE FEELING RUN DOWN, WHAT DO YOU TURN TO FOR RECHARGING AND FEELING BETTER?
Spending time with friends and family is always helpful. Reading allows me to switch off and take a mental break, and I also enjoy listening to podcasts. A nice cup of tea works wonders, and getting outside, whether it’s walking with dogs or just spending time outdoors in the garden, really helps me recharge.
