Towards the end of last term, our Exham House girls enjoyed a visit to watch the Aegon Classic Women’s Tournament at Edgbaston
On 9 June, the first and second year girls in Exham House were lucky enough to go along to the Aegon Classic Women’s Tournament at Edgbaston.
It was a great chance for the girls to see some of the world’s top players on grass in the build up towards Wimbledon. Throughout the day the girls were busy completing a’quiz, meaning they had to watch the games closely – the fact that we could also see four other courts in action was a real bonus!
We had fantastic seats in the front two rows on centre court so we were able to appreciate’how hard and fast the players hit the ball and what amazing footwork they had to produce the shots. The first match we saw was between two 17 year olds (Vekic and Bencic), who had a very close match. The girls were amazed as these two player were the same age as Bloxham Sixth Form students and everyone had fun taking sides to support both players! We were then treated to Francesca Schiavone (2010 French Open winner) against Jie Zheng (Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2012 who lost to Serena Williams), which was a step up in pace from the first match. Schiavone won after a tough’two-set match. We heard later that Ana Ivanovic was the eventual winner of the Aegon Classic.
