An excellent afternoon’s Sevens saw some great rugby played and some thrilling moments, with two of the competitions going right down to the wire.

The destination of the Senior A Cup was in doubt up to the final seconds of the last game ‘ if Seymour had not scored at the death to come from behind to beat Egerton 17-14, the title would have gone to Wilson on tries scored. As it was Seymour, with plenty of speed out wide in the shape of George Grieve, Charlie Gulliver and James Davenport, completed the double, as their B side had already won their competition, with Ollie Haynes’ men totally dominant in all three games.

The Junior competition also resulted in a double, this time for Egerton, whose B team triumphed after narrow victories over Crake and Wilson. Egerton’s A side proved much too strong for their opponents; Alfie Barbeary and Ollie Morgan were in fine form and the final try the side scored against Wilson was certainly the best piece of rugby seen all day, with the full width of the pitch being employed. Freddie Betteridge collected the cup from World Cup winner Miss Reed in front of a large crowd of spectators.

Thanks go to all of them and to the players (over 150 of them in all) and officials ‘ referees, medical staff, ball boys and touch judges ‘ who made this such a successful and enjoyable event. One of the most pleasing features of the day was that the B team competition clearly meant just as much to players and spectators as the A team one did.
