Caspar Henderson, author of “The Book of Barely Imagined Beings” spoke to the Eunoia society about his new book, “A New Map of Wonders,” due to be published in 2017.
Caspar has had an exciting career; working as a film script reader in Los Angeles, an aid worker in Uganda, a research assistant and junior journalist working on human rights. He then became co-ordinator of the Green College centre at Oxford University, focusing on climate change and other environmental issues, as well as working on Costing the Earth, an environmental programme on BBC Radio 4. He has also written on a number of environmental, scientific and human rights topics for top newspapers such as The Financial Times, The Independent, The Ecologist etc, whilst working as consultant, analyst and writer for government, commercial and non-profit organisations.
Caspar’s first book, Book of Barely Imagined Beings: A 21st Century Bestiary received the Roger Deakin Award from the Society of Authors in 2009 and the Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Award in 2010.
Caspar’s new book will be called A New Map of Wonders and celebrates things that makes the world astonishing. His talk described some of his findings, and really allowed the students to think in a more open and abstract way about the world around them, raising deep questions and an awe of the miracles we live amongst.
