Bloxham School’s Junior Book Group recently overcame 32 other teams in the regional heats of an international junior literature quiz to finish in 12th place

Many thanks to Emma Bradley for the review below of what was an exciting and rewarding trip to the UK heats of the International Kids’ Lit Quiz for our students.

Do you know the one-word title of R J Palacio’s book about August?

Do you know which fictional child attended Crunchem Hall School?

Or who foretold the defeat of Troy but whose prophecies were ignored?

Two teams from Bloxham School’s Junior Book Group competed against 45 other school teams in the 2014 UK heats of the International Kids’ Lit Quiz. Known as ‘the sport of reading’ this literary quiz aims to broaden students’ knowledge and encourage a love of reading. The competition is designed to be huge fun, with an element of competition, personal challenge and reward.’

Congratulations to team captain George Urquhart and his team members, Mark Davies, Marcus Smith and Murray Douglas on achieving 12th place overall. The boys also achieved full marks to win the Symbols round, as well as being awarded two on-the-spot prizes.’

Mrs Bradley and Mrs Moyle were very pleased with the conduct of all the students throughout the day and were delighted to take all 12 members of the Junior Book Group along to the event: Harry Mobbs, Lizzy Hudson, Ivo Mclusky, Jessie Urquhart, Richard Lewis, Sam Church, David Bryce and Dan Thorne.’

The book group, which meets weekly in the school library, will continue throughout the year reading ‘The Cloud Hunters’ next and looking ahead to shadowing a literary prize in the Lent term.
