We are delighted to invite you to this year’s school production of Coram Boy, Helen Edmundson’s stage adaptation of Jamila Gavin’s Whitbread prize-winning novel.
Coram Boy was first performed at the National Theatre, before transferring to Broadway. The production is a major collaboration with the music department; it is intertwined with Handel’s Messiah with an original dramatic underscore, composed by the Olivier Award-winning Adrian Sutton (War Horse, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time).
Set in eighteenth-century England, this is a sweeping saga of growing-up, struggle, tradition and corruption. The evil Otis Gardner preys on unmarried mothers, promising to take their babies to the Coram Hospital orphanage, but instead disposes of them and flees with their money. This dark tale follows two orphaned boys on an adventure to rediscover their heritage, whilst along the way realising the redeeming and universal power of music, love and friendship.
The production involves over 100 students and a large number of staff across departments. It takes place on Thursday 29th November, Friday 30th November and Saturday 1st December at 7.30pm (doors open from 7pm).

Please note that due to the sensitive nature of some of the issues explored in the production, that we advise a minimum audience age of 11.
The students have been excellent throughout the rehearsal process, which started at the beginning of this term, and we are really looking forward to sharing the production with the school community.
