The Fourth Form languages trip to Spain proved to be another rotund success last week, and, when you have accommodation like Aldebaran, a farmhouse 40 kilometres North West of Madrid, it is easy to understand why.
The setting was fantastic; acres of uninterrupted countryside, a lovely swimming pool to relax by and cool off in after our trips out, amazing homemade cuisine cooked lovingly by Margarita, including her famous Paella and fresh water melons for dessert on a daily basis. On the second day, we experienced the swimming pools at Cercedilla, an incredible setting nestled in the mountains of the Guadarrama Sierra. Day three was a trip to Toledo, Spain’s first capital and medieval city soaked in history and culture, and day four involved an 11 kilometre walk around Madrid, including the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid’s stadium, the Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace and the famous San Miguel food market.
Towards the end of the week, despite a few very rare rainy days at this time of the year in Madrid, the group travelled by coach to the Warner Brothers theme park where there was a non ‘stop frenzy of roller coaster rides by everyone, except Mrs McCaffrey and I! On our last day we visited El Escorial, a beautiful mountain town with one of the biggest monasteries in the world where all the Spanish kings and queens are buried.
All in all, a wonderful experience with a superb group of students who were engaged, co-operative, inquisitive and just great fun to be with.
