On Wednesday, Second Form students enhanced their study and enjoyed an exciting trip to two of the key locations of the Civil War.
The trip started on the escarpment at Edgehill, with Mr Batten explaining the background to the battle and the positions of the two armies, and then descended to the village of Radway to follow the events of the 23rd October 1642, before finishing their tour at the monument to the men who died at Edgehill (probably about 1,500 of them). Following the battle, which was inconclusive, Charles I and his army headed south towards Broughton Castle, and the Bloxham pupils followed in their footsteps. There they were able to see where the Royalist army laid siege to the home of Lord Saye and Sele,one of the leaders of the Parliamentary side, and we were lucky enough to be joined at this point by his descendant, the present Lord Saye and Sele, the 21st Baron, whose family have lived at Broughton for over 700 years. We were also able to visit the room where Parliamentary leaders held secret meetings in the years before the Civil War, and during the day students even had the chance to handle some of the weapons and equipment worn during the war, including muskets and pikes used at Edgehill.
