Last week, Second Form pupils enjoyed a civil war orientated history trip exploring Edgehill, Radway and Broughton Castle
Thank you to Second Former Murray for his interesting review of the recent Second Form History trip to civil war sites in the local region.
On Wednesday 20th of April, we set off from school to see Edgehill Battlefield near Radway and Kineton, where the first battle of the Civil War took place. We got off the minibus at the top of Edgehill and saw the battlefield through the trees on the hill, and then we walked down. Mr Batten explained the key events from the battle and described how the cavalry removed each other from the battle, and how the parliamentary forces had almost won before the return of the Royalist cavalry forces.
We then proceeded to Radway and saw the church, which had an exhibition all about the battle. This included the weapons, clothes and even the cannonballs that would have been used at the battle! Afterwards, we stopped off at the memorial to the 3,000 soldiers killed in the battle, before moving on to Broughton Castle. The castle itself was besieged by Prince Rupert shortly after the Battle of Edgehill. In Broughton Castle we explored the Great Hall, which included some very interesting pieces of armour and clothing which were actually worn at the battle! We had a tour of the castle and got to see a portrait of the eigth Lord Saye and Sele, who supported parliament and fought in the war. We also saw the room where secret meetings took place between parliament’s supporters, however, we couldn’t see the gardens as a film crew was filming Gardeners’ World at the time!
