Last week, A2 Politics students attended a discussion session with some recognised figures of American politics
Thanks to Ben Humphrey for providing a report on what was a fascinating trip for our Upper Sixth Politics students last week:
On the 13 November, a group of A2 Politics students travelled to Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral home of George Washington. We would be speaking to two former Congress members; The Honourable Mary Bono and the Honourable Brian Baird about American Politics and other matters. Mary Bono was an interesting character she is the widow of Sonny Bono from Sonny and Cher fame while both former Congressmen had served under Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama.
After brief introductions there was an Q&A session where we were invited to ask any questions regarding our A Level syllabus. This was particularly useful as the midterms finished last week, opening up plenty of opportunities for discussion. Topics covered included the role of money in American politics; the power of the Supreme Court justices; the lack of a middle ground in the polarised politics of America today and looked ahead to the 2016 race for the White House.
After the Q&A session concluded we were able to question the Congressmen further over some coffee and cake. It was a fascinating evening that will greatly benefit our A2 studies in American Politics.
