OB Edward Dixon returned to Bloxham School last night to give a fascinating talk on “Painting the War”
In the latest of our ongoing series of talks to mark the centenary of the First World War, Old Bloxhamist Edward Dixon, a regular lecturer on the topic, visited Bloxham School to give a talk (his 102nd of 2014!) on the artists who were inspired by, or affected by, the war.
In a wide-ranging talk entitled ‘Painting the War’, Edward covered some familiar British figures such as John Singer Sergeant and Paul Nash, as well as some less well-known artists like Frederick Varley and Norman Wilkinson. In addition, he also examined the disturbing work of Otto Dix and the profoundly moving sculptures of Kathe Kollwitz. Edward’s knowledge of and passion for his subject made for a fascinating talk leading to some excellent questions from the audience, which nicely rounded off what was a thoroughly successful evening.
