Celebrated author Marcus Sedgwick visited Bloxham School on Tuesday afternoon to share some of his own experiences and opinions with students and staff

Staff and students alike thoroughly enjoyed their visit from renowned author Marcus Sedgwick on Tuesday afternoon.

Marcus initially spoke with members of the Bloxham Book Club, where he gave a fascinating insight into his own experiences of working within publishing before going on to write his own novels. As well as this, there was a particularly interesting discussion as to what types of books he particularly enjoys writing, complex novel-writing techniques that he has experimented with in some of his works, and the incredible depth of research that goes into creating his characters. It was also eye-opening for his audience to hear Marcus actually encourage readers to put down a book that they’re not enjoying and moving on to something new, rather than struggling to finish a book that doesn’t grab your imagination or your interest.

Once the Book Club discussion was over, Marcus then kindly presented to the students of Exham House – giving them the opportunity to ask him plenty of their own questions and revealing the truth behind a number of myths that surround modern-day authors. He also discussed the importance of a book’s cover, explaining how the connotations of the imagery should represent the story inside. Marcus used the example of his novel set around the First World War, The Foreshadowing, which our students have been enjoying studying of late.
