On Friday 31 May, the Old Bloxhamist Golf Society came together at Tadmarton Heath Golf Club for their Spring Meet, playing for The Greenway Trophy.
We are grateful to Peter Murray-White (Wf 64-69) for the following report:
Participating Old Bloxhamists assembled in The Clubhouse at midday, and we were all delighted to see another two old boys join this long-standing Golfing Society. Once play got under way, Simon McDaide (Cr 69-74) and Scott de Weymarn (Cr 07-12, Staff 19-21), former pupil and teacher at Bloxham, soon showed the more regular players how the game should be played.
Scott de Weymarn won the day with an impressive 34 points off a handicap of 8. His playing partner confirmed after the round that he had witnessed a formidable display of controlled power-hitting that defied the strong gusts swirling around the course. As well as an obvious ability with a golf club in his hands, maybe his youthfulness was an additional factor in being able to drive the ball well over 300 yards. As someone so eloquently summed it up in the bar later, “That’s further than I go on holiday!”
Simon McDaide so nearly made it, finishing just one stableford point behind on his debut. John Nason (Wf 56-59), always a consistent performer in these events, tied for third along with our esteemed organiser, OBGS Captain, Simon Smith (Wf 71-76). Like all golfers do, the remaining members of the group managed to find a number of different reasons for not challenging the winning score, but none of them were levelled at the course; ‘Taddy’ was in really good condition again.
The successful OBGS day culminated in an enjoyable formal dinner at which we all put the world to rights.
