Yesterday, Old Bloxhamists who are members of the Egerton Society, the school’s legacy association, met for their annual lunch.
Welcomed by the Deeley family to the Tythe Barn in Launton, Oxfordshire, over 50 members of the Society filled the impressive barn. Guests enjoyed a drinks reception before sitting down to a three course meal. Egerton Society Chaiman, Peter Barwell MBE, introduced the guest speaker, Simon Topman MBE DL, owner and MD of J Hudson & Co (Acme Whistles). Simon entertained guests with the history of his company and some of the more unusual whistles in its collection. Founded in Birmingham in 1883, the company’s first contract was for the original police whistles; it then diversified into referee whistles and counts White Star Lines amongst its more notable customers, which bought 30 whistles for the Titanic. The audience were also treated to the sounds of an array of bird call whistles, as well as a whistle claimed to call monsters! The afternoon finished with an address by Headmaster, Paul Sanderson, who thanked members for their ongoing support of the school.
The Egerton Society was established in 2010 and gives philanthropic OBs the opportunity to contribute through legacies, to a very important Endowment Fund so that a Bloxham education can continue to be made available to talented boys and girls for generations to come.
