OB Robin, who studies Industrial Design and Technology at the University of Loughborough, has earned recognition for his innovative “intelligent” polo safety helmet
OB Robin Spicer left Bloxham a few years ago to go on and study Industrial Design and Technology at the University of Loughborough.
Robin has recently created a prototype of his own invention, the ARMIS Polo Helmet, using a 3D printer and it has received interest from a number of leading retailers and manufacturers.’
OB Robin used his own experience of the game (having played since age six) and his knowledge of the British Standards to create the design. The helmet includes a built-in crash sensor, streamlined air vents, a crumple zone and a double-layered carbon fibre shell. The biggest innovations are the Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS), that moves inside the helmet to mimic the brain’s own protection system, and the low friction layer to reduce the risk of a serious brain injury. Robin’s design will be on display at the university’s Design School show, which start today.
